in hong kong continue to look for survivors following yesterday's devastating boat crash. officials say 36 people were killed and dozens more injured when the boat carrying utility workers collided with the ferry. boat was carrying the workers and their families to watch fireworks to celebrate china's national day. survivors say the boat began to sink immediately after the collision. police in frederick, maryland say they are dealing with the violent crime spike that includes the city's first murder of the year. early sunday morning, 36-year- old lamont ellis was found shot dead in an alley. friends and family members gathered at a vigil last night and while fox 5 was working the story, shots rang out nearby. officers raced to that scene. it turned out to be a street fight involving 15 to 20 people along west south street. one person was stabbed and is in serious condition. no word for the two incidents are related. a local university professor killed in a tragic accident in northwest.

a driver hay medical emergency and lost control of her vehicle. she hit professor rhett leverett as he stood on the sidewalk at sixth and e street. he taught history at marymount with an emphasis on european history. he was 60 years old. protesters will continue today to mark the one-year anniversary of the occupy d.c. movement. protesters will hold a veteran march at noon at freedom plaza as well as a protest tonight in front of the bank of america on vermont and l street. yesterday, protester marched on freedom plaza to the commerce building. they say the anniversary is important to remind people of the issues they say are still unrevolved from last year. m la it is the big story this morning. the nats shock the baseball world and are champs of the

national league east. the celebration lasted well into the morning hours. >> this is their first trip to the playoffs in the team's eight-year history in d.c. fox 5's melanie alnwick live at nats park with more on an incredible season. good morning. >> good morning. the commemorative merchandise is already rolling off the pressess not just there in the fox 5 studio. we understand there will be several places opening up later today, ready to open their doors to fans to come in and get the commemorative t-shirts and pend pennants and all kinds of great things to celebrate the washington's first entry into the post-season. the fans packed in last night anticipating a win over the phillies that would seal their place in the division playoffs. but in the end, it was not a in thes win but a loss by the atlanta braves that put them there. the braves loss to the priorities was in the books was during the last inning of the nationals game. players were popping champagne

corks and fireworks lit up the sky to the roar of jubilant fans. players were high fiving and hugging and went out on to the field to celebrate. it has been a long time coming for fans of washington baseball, the first pro season for a team here in washington, d.c. in 79 years. >> i can't even express right now what i'm he feeling. this is amazing. it was kind ever anticlimactic a little bit but we're going to the post-season. >>-- it was kind of anticlimactic a little bit but we're going to the postseason. >> we lost but we won. >> reporter: a fitting end. such an interesting ending to the season. people would have liked to have seen a win. we have to talk about where they came from. at one point, they had one of

the worst records in major league baseball but that allowed them to pick up some of the players today who have been credited with getting this team to where they are. players like gio gonzalez, stephen strasburg and jayson werth. fans here just elated and excited. the first home game here for the division series is sold out but i did check to see, if you want tickets for home game two, you got $315, you can get into one of these party suites. >> yeah, just a little bit of change laying around. >> that is tucker barnes money they're talking about right there. >> thank you. here is how the playoff picture actually shapes up right now. the nats have the second best record. they would face the giants beginning on saturday. if the nats ends up with the best record in baseball, they would face the winner of the one-game wild card beginning on sunday. the wild card game is between

making headlines this morning, crews worked into the early-morning hours removing three train cars and repairing damaged railroad tracks in central california. a tractor-trailer slammed into the amtrak train yesterday and 20 passengers were hurt. most of the injuries were bumps and bruises and maybe some broken bones in there. while bernie madoff serves his prison sentence, we are learning more about his fraud scheme that landed him behind bars. new york prosecutors say the fraud began as far back as the

early 1970s. it is believed investors lost about $20 billion. that is all according to a rewritten indictment that brings new charges against four long-time madoff employees. ten years ago today, our region was terrorized by a shooting spree. for three weeks, people did not know where the next victimmed would be shot. john allen muhammad and lee boyd malvo were found guilty. malvo told the "washington post" when he saw the reaction of a husband who lost his wife, it made him feel, quote, like scum. one of the great beauties of the world, the largest coral reef system on earth. >> we are talking about the great barrier reef. it is so beautiful. but up next, major concerns about it. we'll tell you what has scientists alarmed. now, let's check in with talker. >> sill celebrating over here

the great barrier reef in australia. scientists say the coral cover has dropped by more than half since 1985. one of the major causes of decline, starfish which feed on the coral. the crown of thorns starfish apparently prosper when artificial nutrients increase in oceans. scientists are kara gormleying up with a way to reduce the population. storm damage is also contributing to the loss of coral. that is astounding to think since 1985. >> something that you don't think about. >> you don't until we see beautiful pictures on tv right now. hopefully, they can do something about that. >> not much we can do about the rain in our area though. >> it is moving in here from the south and west. it will be with us on and off here newout the day. it won't be raining all day long. we'll have periods of showers as we continue to watch this warm front kind of lift through. in you like the milder temperatures, they were on the way later this afternoon. live look at your radar.

you can see most of the rain and/or the heaviest rain continues to be out to the west. but many of the suburbs here just to the west of washington now pretty good rains. reston, you are about to get pretty good rain. manassas, you've had a good shower. leesburg, out towards sterling, front royal, winchester, we've gotten some rain as well. again, all of this is kind of lifting off. you can see it lifting off to the north and east but we will see additional showers develop during the course of the day and move through the district. let me show you what is happening. there is an area of low pressure out to the west today. you can't really see it but it is right there in central kentucky and will be lifting up to the greek and dragging with the it the cloud cover and showers through the washington area. you can see we've got additional showers through the carolinas and some will move through from time to time and present the possibility of some showers around here along with mild temperatures. our warm front has come through. with that warm front moving on n our temperatures will be in the mid-70s later today and actually a little humidity out there for your tuesday. so if you like the summertime

for the next several days with highs around 70. -- a few showers around here tomorrow. let's get the latest from julie wright. >> on the roads right now, waking up to a little bit the wet pavement here. allow extra time on the roads. wet pavement, road spray to accompany you as you travel southbound leaving hyattsville heading into clarksburg. the crash that was westbound route 100 now cleared. you are able to do the double nickel up and across the 14th street bridge. no trouble spots to report at the wilson bridge. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. imetraffic. a new parking plan for d.c. it would reserve about 10% of all meters for disabled drivers. it is also expected to cut down on fraud. >> the new effort comes after a lot of people complained about

the red top meters. that program is suspended and now, as fox 5's matt ackland shows us, there is a new plan to consider. >> reporter: it was supposed to solve all of the problems. in red top meters would reserve spots for the disabled and spot the abuse of the city's old free disabled parking policy. soon after it started, the council shut it down. there was mass confusion. >> the program got off to what we can characterize as a fairly rocky start. >> reporter: many complained there were simply not enough red tops. but now, a plan introduced by councilmember mary cheh would make 1800 of the district's 18,800 meter spots red top disabled parking only. >> all 100 red top meters will be installed at the end of blocks nearest to the the curb cuts. >> reporter: fraud was one reason for the reform. a fox 5 investigation exposed those who and to be using

disabled parking placards to park free all day. the district followed up with its open camera investigation. >> we've had a problem. some able-bodied drivers have abused the district's current disabled parking system by fraudulently displaying handicap placards on their dashboards in order not to pay parking meet are fees. >> reporter: but is 10% too much? officials say there are over 160,000 people living in d.c. who are disabled. and many more who travel into the city each day. >> the mayor's mission is to make sure we are a national model of acceptability. it is very important to the ad mark. it is the right thing to do. >> reporter: at this point, the red top policy is not being enforced. currently, there are about 450 red top meters on the streets in d.c. there are many more sitting in warehouses and, if cheh's plan goes through, the city will have to order 300 new

welcome back. tuesday, october 2nd. taking a look at the traffic there on the beltway. first, let's check in with tucker to get the latest on the weather. we saw a little bit of rain overnight t will continue off and on? >> showers throughout the day. we have a pretty good batch of showers just to the west. heavy enough that it will probably slow your commute if you are coming in from places

like leesburg and reston. it is possible you could hear a rumble of thunder too. we could see a few thunderstorms later today. some of this rain shower activity now approaching the district. i think most of us will get at least some shower activity here touring the morning hours. and that will be the theme around here today. lots of clouds. might be a peak of sunshine with on again, off again showers as we continue to watch this area of low pressure pass to our west. temperature right now at reagan national, it is in the 60s. nice and mild. it will be a nice mild afternoon with highs expected to top out in the mid-70s. a little warmer than yesterday. 66 right now in washington. 61 out at dulles. here is your forecast, temperatures in the mid-70s later today with showers in the forecast. if you are just tuning in right now and you think it is casual friday, it is just tucker wearing the big new t- shirt in town. the nats the division champs. we'll be seeing these a lot. >> i think they gave them out last night to the fans. >> a lot of people got them. it looks very nice on you.

celebrate the first step to a world title. melanie alnwick has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i'm not feeling left out. i got my commemorative t-shirt as well here. the nationals wanting people to know that these are rolling off the presses. it will be available for sale at the nationals team store today as well as other partner locations. fans just packed nationals park here last night. i think i even saw mayor tony williams, former mayor tony williams back behind home plate last night when jayson werth was up to bat. they were all hoping that there would be a win against the phillies that would really seal their place in the post high pressure season in the division series. but it ended up not being a win but a loss by the braves that put them there. the braves lost to the pittsburgh pirates. was in the the last inning of the nationals game. the nats were up able to score against the phillies but as the

last out crossed the plate, the celebration erupted anyway. players popped champagne corks. there were high fives and celebration on the field. this has been a long time coming for washington baseball fans. the first postseason for a team based in d.c. the team is feeling pretty good that this season isn't just a fluke. >> we know we had a lot to do this year. we want to be in this position year in and year out if i along time. >> when i got drafted two years ago, i knew we were going to have a great team. we had a great organization. we just have a great staff, great group of guys and, of course, i thought we were going to win definitely. i had no doubt in my mind. maybe that is a little cocky but that is how i am. >> reporter: it has been an incredible rookie seen for bryce harper. his number 34 jersey is now the fourth best selling jersey in

story, conducting interviews at police headquarters, shots rang out. -- family members gathered at a vigil last night. one person is stabbed and is in serious condition. no word for the two incidents are related. are related. it has been 10 years to the day since the d.c. sniper attacks began. ten people were killed and three others hurt touring the shooting spree. john allen muhammad and lee boyd malvo were eventually captured and convicted of the killings. malvo is serving a life sentence with no parole in virginia. in an interview with the "washington post," he admits there is no way to properly convey an apology to the families of his victims. occupy d.c. protesters are expected to continue their marches today with a veterans march at noon and a sleepful protest outside of the bank of america on vermont and l street this evening. ♪ oh, when the chamber comes rushing down &&. >> yesterday, the group marched

in hong kong, more than 30 people are dead and dozens more injured following a boating accident. a boat carrying 121 utility workers to celebrate china's national day collided with a ferry last night. officials say the boat sank shortly after. the rescuers are still working to recover more bodies this morning. >> north korea is warning that u.s. policy is hostile an is pushing the korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war. the north korean foreign minister blasted the united states in a speech to the u.n.

yesterday. he also said his country's nuclear program is a deterrent to all-out war. no comment yet from the white house. police are hoping for new clues today in a decades-old mystery. scientists at michigan state university are expected to release the results of tests on soil samples from the ground beneath a driveway in a residential neighborhood. they are trying to determine whether the remains of jimmy hoffa could be buried there. the teamsters boss vanished almost 40 years ago and neighbors are eagerly awaiting that report. >> this is history in the making. amazing. >> i think it would be cool if it was. something good for the community, something cool to say this is where you live. jimmy hoffa is buried there. >> a tip about the prior owner of the property who worked for a detroit mafia cap tape led to the search. police are not sure the time line matches up to hoffa's death but investigators say we should learn more today. the big debates start

tomorrow night and both the president and governor romney are practicing in mock debates. the president took a break from preparing to vies -- visit a local campaign office and brought in pizza. he even got on the phone to make some calls to residents of nevada. romney is getting ready at a denver hotel today. yesterday, he rallied voters at a campaign event. he is pointing to the turmoil in the middle east and libya i sag the preis in over his head and the country will be worse off if he gets a second term. the white house with a whole new look for a good cause. that is coming up next. >> plus, the world's biggest frito chili pie. that sounds like a stomachache.

heavy here in spots just off to the west of washington. this will likely -- we'll talk to julie but i think this will probably slow things down. as we head out towards dulles airport, the rain continues to fall at a pretty good rate. here in washington, points east, not a whole lot at the moment. we'll see additional showers later today as we switch maps. we'll be able to show you that the shower activity continues. there we go. and you can see the heaviest here just off to the north and west of washington. we've got some spotty showers breaking out now in anne arundel county and down to the south. lots of showers in the forecast today. lots of clouds too. along with some mild temperatures. area of low pressure out to the west. going to drag itself up into the great lakes and drag all this moisture and cloud cover you see across the mid-atlantic through the region later today. so bring an umbrella. be ready for periods of shower activity. we will have showers in the forecast on and off for your
